An anti-climatic night last night after the events of the previous 36 hours. And the viewing didn’t help lift spirits. It was a pretty arid night — Hugh Grant as the British PM (Tony Blair????) in Love Actually on Seven at 8.30pm. Really, I ask you. Love Actually is in that small group of go to movies for Australian commercial TV network programmers. Pirates of The Caribbean is another go to for Seven. The Crock Dundees and Shawshank Redemption and the Harry Potters at Nine as other good examples. Law and Order at Ten (not a movie, but spak filla for black holes in Ten’s schedules) is another example. Midsomer Murders, Poirot, Marple (she’s off to Gem to join Poirot), and QI perform the same function at the ABC, which will be really stretched in 2015 filling the schedule with normal programming, let alone repeats.

What stood out yesterday was the absolute domination of Sunrise on Seven yesterday — 985,000 national/ 634,000 metro/ 351,000 regional viewers. Nine’s Today did well with 700,000 national/ 502,000 metro/ 198,000 regional viewers, but Sunrise is the go-to program for morning viewers.

Test cricket begins this afternoon with Steve Smith leading Australia for the first time. Should be great viewing. Enjoy.
